Pre-Programmed Hearing Aids Are Available Online, Direct From Manufacturers
Like just about everything else, you can buy hearing aids over the internet directly from a select group of internet hearing aid manufacturers.
Most internet hearing aids cost far less than custom hearing aids from name-brand manufacturers. The difference in price is in the service you get. There’s no local audiologist involved to program the hearing aids for you, so for custom programming you must submit a copy of a recent hearing test, which the manufacturer uses to program the hearing aids at the factory.
Also, to purchase FDA approved hearing aids over the internet, you must either submit a doctor’s written recommendation or sign a waiver saying you do not want a medical evaluation and that you have been informed that “exercise of the waiver is not in the user’s best health interest.” In other words, if you notice a problem with your ears or your hearing, always see a doctor (ideally an ENT) and get your hearing tested by a certified audiologist. And if you decide not to, proceed at your own risk!
NOTE: If you are trying hearing aids for the first time, you can opt for a less expensive PSAP (personal sound amplification product) to get an idea of what sound clarification and amplification can do for you. (Click here for a separate list of PSAP manufacturers). To better understand the difference between over-the-counter sound amplifiers and FDA-approved hearing aids, see the FDA explanation.
